DOMFRONT Castle,
built on a sandstone spur, overhangs from 50 metres the
transverse valley of the river "the Varenne".
It controlled the road who links CAEN to Maine and to Anjou.
The first wooden Castle was built
around 1010 by Guillaume de Belleme.
The one made of stone which remains are
visible, was built around 1100 by Henri 1er Beaucler, lord of DOMFRONT in 1092
and king of England in1100. It was demolished by Sully in 1608.
Protected by strong fortifications, the
enclosure delimits an
area of one hectare and half approximately where were
a
lot of buildings whose existence is confirmed by medieval documents.
At the time of the excavations on this
site, a lot of medieval ceramics were found : jugs with grooved neck and large
handle, cheesestrainers, global pots with handle, partridge’s eye vases.
For
the majority, they have a local origin, a clay and
sandstone pit is situated
some kilometres from here.
